I copied this from someone's post on the Sabre in November '03, don't remember who. 1999 was a mixed bag, there were several outstanding players including McMullen and Schaub who might be the second best in school history at their respective positions. Fired a lot of blanks though.
Star players: 5. Contributors: 3. No impact: 11.
Five+: 3. Four+: 2. Three+: 1. Two+: 2. One+: 4. Total: 23. Score: 34.
(quoted post below)
Spinner (QB) - washed out academically after 3 years ++
Schaub (QB) - AA candidate, impact player +++++
Ward (TB) - no redshirt; concussions ended career early
McMullen(WR) - no redshirt; AA candidate, impact player +++++
Sawyer (WR) - bounced around, rollplayer, special teams star +++
Rosales-Webb (WR) - never played, washed out 2nd year
Bailey (OL) - All-ACC candidate, injuries have hurt him badly ++
Carber (OL) - too small, played OK as 4th year, not invited back +
Kimball (OL) - projected to play as 4th year, didn't, not invited back
Green (OL) - quit team after 3rd year, never really contributed
Walker (DL) - played OK as 4th year, not invited back +
Chism (DL) - didn't even last a semester
McWeeney(DL) - no redshirt; quit team after 2nd year, had potential +
Ricks (DL) - quit team after 2nd year, never played
Simmons (DL) - quit team after 3rd year, at Walker, Kimball level
Battle (DE) - no redshirt; quit team after 3rd year, no impact
Crowell (LB) - no redshirt; All-ACC career, impact player +++++
Robertson(LB)- no redshirt; played DE early, LB late ... solid player ++++
Cosby (LB) - quit after 3rd year, saw a little time
Dickerson(LB)- quit after 3rd year, no impact
Evans (DB) - no redshirt; played early and often ... solid player ++++
Norfleet (LB) - redshirted, special teams and backup, no 5th year. +
McMullen, Crowell, Robertson, Evans finished solid careers in '02
Schaub, Bailey, Sawyer are finishing careers in '03
7 out of 23 isn't very good for productive careers. But its kind of
interesting to note that 3 additional kids who were good enough to
play as true freshman (Battle, Ward, McWeeney) ended up as career non-
entities.
Look at last year's excellent class
Tobin, Spradlin, Orange are already gone
Snelling and Willie Davis may have a Ward like injury issue
Evans, Darden, Tynes, Amart, Morton, Bell, MJ haven't made an impact
yet. Campbell, Robinson, Hagan aren't really doing that much better,
though all are using a 2nd year of eligibility.
Lundy, D'Brick, Butler, Blackstock, Hughes are the best true sophs
Brooks, Parham, Franklin, Hamilton are the best rfr fresh
hmmm: assuming only Brooks goes to the NFL early, we might easily
have a redshirt senior class of 5 or 6 Parham, Franklin, Hamilton,
MJ, Tynes, Darden (randomly assuming a couple of names).
I don't think 8-10 is in the cards at all. 1/2 your impact players
play as TF, 1/2 redshirt ... not all of the kids playing as 1st years
last 4 years. Not all the kids redshirting get invited back.
Academics and injuries take kids from all categories.
I'm kind of curious what school has the most redshirt seniors? To do
that, you really have to curtail early playing time. We don't ...
especially with Williams, Mines, Sammis, IYC, Catterton. Anyone know
the numbers around the ACC ?
